Urban expansion presents both opportunities and challenges for the
country and the world. Urbanization, if carefully managed, could spearhead India’s emergence as a green country.
The booming cities in India can go for green technology in urbanization. There is a significant scope for the large scale implementation of sustainable green urbanization across the country.
Recently, over 30 parameters that need to be complied with for management of energy, water, land, solid waste, air quality, noise levels at every stage of construction are pointed out for green urbanization.
New guidelines have been issued in India to ensure green urbanization to reap its benefits.
NEW GUIDELINES
The new guidelines for green urbanization are as under:
• At least 1 per cent of connected applied load of power shall be met
from renewable energy sources such as photo voltaic cells or wind mills.
• A regular energy audit shall be ensured through energy auditors certified by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
• One tree shall be planted for every 100 square meter of land area. If trees are to be cut or transplanted, compensatory plantation of 3 trees for every cut should be ensured.
• A rainwater harvesting plan to be designed providing one recharge bore for every 3,000 square meter of land area.
• Sewage treatment plants shall be installed to ensure treatment of solid waste generated.
• Natural flow of storm water channels should not be altered without the approval of competent authorities. Entry and Exit points of such channels must be retained.
• Fertile top soil must be retained and reused on the site.
• Separate wet and dry bins should be provided at the ground level to facilitate segregation of waste.
• Possession of buildings should be handed over only after proper drainage and water connections are provided and the no objection certificate is obtained from the competent authority.
• Organic waste composer / vermi culture pit with a minimum
capacity of 0.3 kg. / tenement / day should be installed.
BENEFITS OF GREEN URBANIZATION
If the above mentioned guidelines are followed by the builders,
green
urbanization is definite and it will ensure the following
benefits.
• There will be significant savings in energy, water usage costs.
• Development of new, alternative technologies and business models for ‘green’ construction products and services is possible and thus market innovation is ensured.
• The realty sector can position itself as an industry with a
vision
and mission towards furthering the cause of sustainable green
urbanization in India and can ensure further development.
