International
Day for MSMEs - 27 June
From now on, every year
27 June will be observed as International Day for Micro, Small and Medium-sized
Enterprises (MSMEs).
Recently, the United
Nations General Assembly took the decision to recognise the importance of MSME
in achieving the new global development goals, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development.
In a resolution adopted
without a vote, the 193-member body also requested all stakeholders, including
Member States, UN entities and civil society organisations, to observe the Day,
according to a press statement of the UN.
The UN resolution was
introduced by the delegation of Argentina. The representative of the country
stated that more than 95% of enterprises in the world are MSME and they account
for about 60% of private sector employment.
International Council
for Small Business (ICSB) actively lobbied for the move and provided different
support.
Last year ICSB held its
61st Annual World Conference at the United Nations with representatives from
over 55 countries in attendance.
In that conference, it
also made a declaration about the urgent need to have a day to recognise the
MSMEs in the development process.
In Bangladesh, MSME
contributes around 35% of the national economy, 75% of job and 95% of total
enterprises.
