Capitalising on India’s growing affluence and the increasing trend of vacationing abroad, Tourism
Australia, in association with its key distribution partners, focussed on increasing
awareness about the destination among travel enthusiasts in Tamil Nadu.
The robust
distribution and marketing initiatives undertaken over the years have boosted
the market potential, making Tamil Nadu a key tourism source market in India
today.
As per Tourism Australia’s statistics over the past 3 years, Tamil
Nadu has recorded an increase of 13 per cent in tourist arrivals and a tremendous
increase of 24% in spend.
For the year ended December 2015, 17,500
tourists from Tamil Nadu visited Australia and spent as much as A$ 78 Mn (Rs. 378 crores) on their holidays.
Mr. Nishant Kashikar,
Country Manager, India & Gulf, Tourism Australia, said, “Tourism
Australia’s consumer research has revealed that world class beaches, coastlines
and marine wildlife have been identified as the top attractions by travellers
from Tamilnadu. They are showing an increasing interest in beach holidays, culinary
tourism and an increased preference for self-drive holidays in the country. We are also noticing a growing trend of Indian
tourists wanting to explore new regions and non-traditional destinations such
as Hamilton Island, Kangaroo Island and Tasmania.
Australia has a diverse range of some of the world’s best tourism
experiences to suit the needs of every member of the family, and with the
commencement of Singapore Airlines’ low cost carrier, Scoot’s services from
Chennai to Australia, via Singapore, we are optimistic that numbers from the
State will continue to grow.”
To support the distribution network,
Tourism Australia runs the ‘Aussie
Specialist Program’ – an online training initiative aimed at building
confidence and knowledge levels of travel representatives on the destination.
Currently, over 300 agents from Tamil
Nadu are registered on the online Aussie Specialist program. Tourism Australia
has collaborated with leading travel companies in Tamilnadu such as Baywatch
Travels, Peekay Holidays, Ascon Holidays, Akshaya Tours,
Avocet Tours, Pegasus Travels, amongst many others, for product development and
destination training workshops, and to equip them to sell the destination more
effectively.
Tourism Australia frequently collaborates with its key distribution and
airline partners for promotional campaigns across the print and digital space.
