‘Shaping the Future through Innovative Technology’ is the theme
Rubbercon 2015, an International Rubber Conference with the theme "Shaping the Future through Innovative Technology" was inaugurated by H.E. Dr. K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu. Mr. Vipul Shah, COO, Reliance Petrochemical Business, delivered the keynote address.
The conference is divided into 4 sessions namely Business, Plenary, Technical and Educational Courses.

Governor’s Speech
It is a pleasure to inaugurate the International Rubber Conference - RUBBERCON 2015 and address this distinguished gathering here today.
Conferences are eye openers. That too if it is an International Conference it is not only a platform to exchange experience and expertise but also a ground to kickstart our strategies to make 'made in India's products to reach global markets.
As emphasized by Honble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi this conference reminds us of the opportunity that lies ahead and to surge forward to build the future of our nation. We have made rapid strides in various fields. What we require is innovative thinking, research and farsighted approach to build India into a global leader.
I am reminded of the term "Gandhian Engineering" coined by Dr.R.A.Mashelkar getting more from less for more and more people. This a challenge that lies before the Indian Industry and it would pave the way to establish India as a nation with world class innovations.
The Indian manufacturing sector is rapidly emerging as a globally competitive one. Indian brands are getting established and some of them have attained global stature. Our nation is blessed with abundant raw material and technical manpower. This makes India the preferred destination for manufacturing. The Indian manufacturing sector has to move rapidly to achieve National Manufacturing Plan's ambition of 25% share of Manufacturing in GDP by 2022.
It is a matter of pride to mention that Tamil Nadu has emerged as the second largest economy among Indian states in 2013-14. It is the first among Indian states with higher number of factories, first in terms of total number of persons employed, third in terms of invested capital and third in terms of industrial output. Over and above, Tamil Nadu is ranked first in terms of number of new MSME projects registered during 2013-2014. According to ASSOCHAM report published in Feb 2015, Tamil Nadu has been adjudged as the best performing state in terms of eight out of nine development parameters like economy, industrial development, combined infrastructure, power, roads, health, income and overall development.
For Research and Development, there should be a joint and coordinated effort. The industrialists and higher educational institutions should play a stellar role in promotion of Research and Development. This will make India compete globally.
I am pleased to learn that India is the 5th largest producer of Natural Rubber next to Thailand, Indonesia, Vitenam and China and is the second largest in natural rubber consumption next to China and the Indian Rubber Industry provides Employment to about 5 lakh and fifty five thousand people. Statistics reveal that in the Indian Rubber production, po s, subways Kerala contributes 85% and contribution of Tamil Nadu is 4% followed by Tripura.
Infrastructure like power, roads, bridges and ports, large number of air and and underground railway systems will facilitate rapid and efficient transpao sdnecessary that scientific systems in all these contexts require a lot of machinery, equipment there is also a requirement for more rubber goods and ancillaries. Therefore, it i and integration of we build our rubber industry into a very sophisticated and research oriented one.
Socio-economic restructuring, quickening the pace of decision makin implementation of new technologies is the need of the hour. Indian Rubber Industry has a very significant role to play to the economic growth of the country. Polymers of various kinds are being used in multiple applications across segments like automobile. household goods, engineering industry, defence sector and in other areas. Progress of India's automotive industry has helped development of a significant tyre sub-sector through direct and indirect participation of world's top four tyre majors. In the last four decades the average growth of Indian tyre industry has been 8% and is expected to grow in double digit in the next decade.
I am sure this conference would pave the way for coming together of educational and organizational workers and doers in the field of rubber and rubber product manufacturing. Considering the progress of Indian Rubber Industry and future technical manpower required for Rubber and Allied Industry, it is high time we facilitate more and more 'University -Industry interaction' on a continual basis.
It is a welcome one that the Indian Rubber Institute is acting as a bridge between industry and academic institutions and continuing educational activities on Rubber Science & Technology. Its initiatives to organize Technical lectures, workshops. conferences, seminars, to impart job training and skill development and to conduct various professional examinations are laudable.
It is heartening to note that Indian Rubber Institute has signed MoU with American Chemical Society, Rubber Division. USA for upgrading knowledge and skill of the people associated with Rubber and Allied Industry in the Asia Pacific Region.
The vital industrial strength of the Indian Rubber Industry is the synergistic bond between the well established natural rubber production sector and fast growing rubber product manufacturing sector. Elastomer consumption in the country is projected to register rapid growth in the next few years. Increasing relocation of manufacturing facilities of Asian countries and expanding domestic market for rubber products are inevitable. The Indian Rubber goods manufacturing sector should gear itself for modernization to compete globally.
I am confident that this conference will provide a forum to discuss the latest technological opportunities, trends and development in the field of rubber science and allied material technology and facilitate exploring of the horizons in this specialized field.
