Could India strike a balance?

-The growing Indian Solar Industry could result in water scarcity, but not addressing soiling could result in poor energy generation-

Renewable energy has become the key word in the global path way to progress and the same reflects in India, with the Indian solar industry seeing an upswing. The new solar Target of India to be achieved by 2022 is 100 GW, this in order meet both domestic energy demands and to tackle climate change. The only issue that could hold us back, resulting in severe constraint to energy supplies and solar expansion in India is water scarcity.

The obvious question that may arise is that how and why is water relevant to solar energy generation.  The apt environment for installation of solar power panels is where there is abundant of sunshine and land, making the deserts of India the most preferred. The solar power production in these areas are optimum but for the major problem of soiling. The International Journal of Sustainable Energy reported that energy production loss caused by soiling can reach up to 40%. Soiling is a problem then addressed with cleaning using water based solutions. According to a CEEW estimate, the water requirements for operation and maintenance in India to lie between 7000 and 20000 litres per MW per wash, where panels are usually cleaned on a weekly basis (though this amount will vary with the scale and location of plants). The water constraint if not factored in could result in poorer efficiency of the solar installations and hence lower energy generation.

The solution to this is a water-free solar array cleaning solution, cost-effectively keeps photovoltaic panels at peak performance, even in the toughest desert conditions. This enables solar parks to maximize energy output using neither water nor manual labour.Ecoppiais an Israel based innovative solution offering company that is entering the Indian marketwith a solution to the water woes of the solar industry. The autonomous energy-independent water-free E4 robots by Ecoppia use a soft microfiber and controlled air flow cleaning system to remove 99% of dust daily, keeping panels at optimal production. The robot demonstrates an ROI in as less a time as 18 months.  Such supporting technologies have not just addressed issues but have also opened the avenues to innovative technologies that could help achieve India’s solar target effectively and help in building a greener world.
