Bariatric Surgery becoming popular in India: Dr. Praveen Raj

Bariatric Surgery refers to laparoscopic surgery performed in stomach/intestines or both for the treatment of obesity and resolution of its associated diseases like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, menstrual problems etc. It has now proved to be a treatment modality for treatment of uncontrolled diabetes and patients dependant on insulin.

With this advancement, diabetes cure is now possible, although not every diabetic requires a surgery. This is possible by change in the hormones in the intestines which enables the insulin produced by the pancreas work more efficiently. Even in patients with poor control of diabetes with the background of insulin therapy, the surgery will be successful in controlling sugar levels. Hence, this can also be called diabetes cure surgery.

Addressing the Media, Dr. Praveen Raj said, “With India having the third largest population with obesity and second of diabetes in the world, bariatric surgery is a boon to help a large percentage of these patients. Bariatric surgeries are now being performed in increasing numbers in India and South India and Gem Obesity & Diabetes Surgery centre, unit of Gem Hospital & Research Centre leads the way in establishing the highest standards. In fact, they are the only centre recognized as an International Centre of Excellence in this specialty by the Surgical Review Corporation, USA for meeting established standards in par with Centers of Excellence in the world.”

Talking about its impact on Diabetes, Dr. Praveen Raj elaborated, “Recent research shows weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, may be a safe treatment option for individuals who are mildly obese or overweight and suffering from uncontrolled diabetes. Previous studies have shown that weight-loss surgery improves type 2 diabetes in nearly 90 percent of patients. Bariatric surgery is associated with long-term survival and improved quality of life in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Weight-loss surgery is often considered a treatment for people who are severely obese – those who have a body mass index, or BMI, or 35 or more.”

Added benefits of bariatric surgery

In general, the benefits of the surgery go beyond weight loss:

•         Long-term remission for type 2 diabetes
