The 7th edition of  LAPAROFIT 2015, the International Conference and Live Workshop on Bariatric Surgery was inaugurated on November 20, 2015 at Chennai. The two day conference (20thand 21st Nov) is organized by Gem Hospital & Research Centre, Coimbatore and also been titled as the ASIAN SUMMIT. Efficient surgeons from India and Asia Pacific attended the conference.

According to Dr. Praveen Raj, Lead Consultant, Department of Bariatric Surgery, GEM Hospital, “India has the third largest population with obesity and second of diabetes in the world. Bariatric surgery is a boon to a large percentage of these patients. Bariatric surgeries are now being performed in increasing numbers in India and South India and Gem Obesity & Diabetes Surgery centre, unit of Gem Hospital & Research Centre leads the way in establishing the highest standards. In fact, we are the only centre recognized as an International Centre of Excellence in this specialty by the Surgical Review Corporation, USA for meeting established standards on par with Centers of Excellence around the world.”

About its impact on Diabetes, Dr. Praveen Raj elaborated, “Recent research shows weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, may be a safe treatment option for individuals who are mildly obese or overweight and suffering from uncontrolled diabetes. Previous studies have shown that weight-loss surgery improves type 2 diabetes in nearly 90 percent of patients. Bariatric surgery is associated with long-term survival and improved quality of life in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Weight-loss surgery is often considered a treatment for people who are severely obese – those who have a body mass index, or BMI, or 35 or more.”
