Frequent disturbance in Export and Import movement in and out from Chennai Port
Terminal is seriously effecting the exports and making reliability of
Indian exporters at stake, said Dr. A Sakthivel, Regional Chairman, FIEO
Southern Region.
The perennial congestion problems in Chennai Port has
already seriously impacted the costing of the export products as
exporters are forced either to pay huge detention charges to logistic
providers or divert their cargo to other Ports incurring additional
expenses apart from the huge cost of delays.
Frequent
strikes by various agencies become common phenomena in Chennai Port
and presently import and export containers are accumulated which
forced the Terminal operators to regulate cargo movement. Due to
recession in global markets, presently importers are insisting on ‘just
in delivery’ schedule. Without adequate infrastructure and support from
Port, prompt logistic services, etc, export may further dip. Dr.
Sakthivel also requested Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to take
initiative to restart the work on Chennai Port – Maduravoyal, Chennai elevated
corridor project.
