Award for Best Journalist / Scholarship for Students announced
Rangaswami Parthasarathy (1915-2003) was a doyen of Journalism and was associated with the newspaper industry for over 50 years, particularly with ‘The Mail’ and ‘The Hindu’. His passion for writing made him author three books on Journalism, notable among them being “Here is the News! Reporting for the Media”. On the spiritual side, he wrote a book on Shridi Sai Baba called“God who walked on Earth”.
To commemorate his birth centenary, a committee consisting of eminent citizens of Chennai was formed and a decision was taken to perpetuate his memory by recognizing talented journalism students and one best journalist from across India on the centenary year.
Mr. R.P. Ram Mohan, his son said, “This is the first year where the committee will give away 1 Lakh each to five students of Journalism from the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai and also recognize an Eminent Journalist from India and present him/her with a Best journalist Award. “
Mr. Madhav Narayan, his grandson said, “This year the Jury has unanimously selected Mr. Shekhar Gupta, currently Vice-Chairman of the India Today Group and former Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Express, as the first recipient of this award. The award will be presented at a function on Sunday the 17th May at Chennai.”

Prof. Nalini Rajan, Dean of Asian College of Journalism added, “We are delighted to be part of this historic event. Asian School of Journalism has made a mark, right from the day it was founded in 1994. Many of our students today hold high positions across the media spectrum in India. The scholarship announced by the Trust will encourage talented students from the poorer sections to aspire to get the quality education from ACJ and rise in their careers.”
About Mr. Rangaswami Parthasarathy
Mr. Rangaswami Parthasarathy, born in 1915 in Chennai, worked with ‘The Mail’ and came to be known as “Mail Parthasarathy” or “MP” by his colleagues. He served as the News editor for many years and brought new dimensions in news projection. Towards the end of his career he was commissioned to write the great book “Hundred years of The Hindu”, which is also acclaimed to be a book on the history of Indian Independence movement.
Mr. Parthasarathy was a dynamic personality who wrote a series of books on Journalism, some of which are prescribed today as text books for Journalism students. He wrote as a film critic in the first recreation magazine of India, “The Sports & Passtime” under the name of Partha. He was also instrumental in the growth of Amateur theatre in South India, and conducted several drama festivals under the aegis of Amateur theatre federation. He also wrote several books on Shirdi Sai baba and was an active member of Sai Spiritual Centre, Bangalore.
Mr. Parthasarathy was awarded the prestigious N. Raghunatha Aiyer Memorial Award for Excellence in Journalism for his eminent contribution to the field of journalism.
