Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority : Lift Connectivity to Terrace Permitted

Chennai : Lift Connectivity to Terrace Permitted

Many in Chennai have wondered as to why is that lifts never take one to the roof top of city buildings. Apparently, rules never permitted it.

Reacting to a plea from the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI), Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has now passed an order permitting developers to provide lift access to terrace floor of buildings.

CREDAI's contention, while demanding relaxation of norms for lifts, was that it would enable senior citizens & physically challenged to have access to terrace. It is also in line with the government's policy of providing a barrier-free environment to all.

While relaxing the norms, CMDA has said that it would be subject to the developer adhering to safety norms and it would be decided by the member secretary of CMDA.

In the case of residential development, the developer will have to give an undertaking to the CMDA that the terrace floor would not be converted for any other use.
