Youth in the age group of 15-29 years comprise of 27.5% of the population. At present, about 34% of Indian Gross National Income (GNI) is contributed by the youth aged 15-29 years.

However, it is ascertained that there exists a huge potential to increase the contribution of this class of the nation’s citizenry by increasing their labour force participation and their productivity in a larger sense of economic and social development.

Productive youth participation

The Government of India (GOI) currently invests more than Rs.90,000 crores per annum on youth
development programmes or approximately Rs. 2,710 per young individual per year, through youth – targeted (higher education skill development healthcare etc.) and non targeted programmes such as food subsidies, employment etc. In addition the state Governments and a number of other stake holders are also working to support youth development and to enable productive youth participation in all walks of life.

As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned about 26% of the total population of 7.21 crores (2011 census) are in the age group of 11 to 21 years (from secondaryto senior secondary school). That
is to say about one fourth of the population is active in the sense not only on production side but
can bring social reforms.

In 1970s, I have illustrated through an article “A conceptual approach to rural development by students’ participation – A case study of Tamil Nadu” how student population can be deployed for uplifting the rural masses. The author advocated how improvement can be brought by students on economic, social as well as physical grounds in villages.

At that time only there were 406 higher education centres, with which it is
well demonstrated that the entire Tamil Nadu could be easily covered. Now the higher education centres have increased many folds, say 5 times it is easy to cover each and every village.

Clean India” and “Make in India

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has struck the right chord by connecting with the youth of the nation by making them believe that they have the power and the potential to change the way the world perceives India.

The two slogans “Clean India” and “Make in India” are to be brought to the minds of young
generation and to adopt it.

“Clean India” now only felt by the urban has to extend to rural. In the true sense when each and every village is clean then only India will be clean. It has to be responsibility of the students who can take up this novel job.

The “Make in India” programme includes major new initiates designed to facilitate
investment, foster innovation protect intellectual property and build best-in-class
manufacturing infrastructure.

“Make in India” does not stop with machines and metals but includes farm products. The survival of rural masses and employment can be well fit into “Make in India”. The young who looks forward white collared jobs especially towards IT sector, have to turn their heads and hands to “Agriculture”.

There are much to be done in the rural areas for example Animal Husbandry,
Fisheries, minor irrigation, rural water supply, sanitation, ecological planning and harvesting solar energy.

India, for its welfare is much looking forward to the young and young generation only.
