2040...!
World Population Day: 11 July
The pace of urbanisation is such that today
India's urbanization has touched 32%. By the year 2040, it is expected to go to
42% and by the year 2050, it would touch 50% as cities are engines of growth.
In fact 65% of GDP is coming from cities, said
Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu, Hon'ble Minister of Urban Development, Housing &
Urban Poverty Alleviation and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India while
inaugurating the conference on Smart Cities in Tamil Nadu organised by CII.
An estimated 13 countries have evinced keen
interest in setting up smart cities and they will help in drafting the master
plan.
Among the countries keen for association with
India include US, Japan, Australia, Sweden, Singapore and Germany. They have
realized that India is the happening place especially after Mr. Narendra Modi
assumed as Prime Minister of India.
The biggest advantage for India is that 60% of
its population constitutes younger generation. Taking this into consideration,
Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has announced his vision of creating 100 smart
cities across the country.
Stressing the need for a whopping Rs. 40 lakh
crore for developing smart cities across India and another Rs. 20 lakh crore
for maintaining them, he said that there is a need for local bodies to refrain
from populist measures and instead opt for transparent and judicious tax
models.
