Workshop on Wheelchair Basketball

Venue : Delhi, Pune, Kothamangalam, Bangalore and Chennai
Date: 5th – 23rd December 2014

This December 2014, Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India, WBFI is planning to organise a series of
disability sports workshops on Wheelchair Basketball and Boccia across five major locations in India; Delhi,
Kerala (Kothamangalam), Bengaluru, Pune and Chennai.

“Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India” was registered as a National body for promoting this sport in India under societies act. This is an important milestone in the progress of Paralympic sport in India. Sport is a fundamental Right for persons with disability.

The workshops are organised by WBFI in partnership with Choice International, UK, The International
Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, New Delhi, YWTC Charitable Trust, Chennai and other local partners.
Through these workshops we aim to improve self-confidence, motivation, and social inclusion of persons with disabilities in India. Sport can be used as a tool to empower disabled people within their communities and in society at large. It can become a gateway to employment, leadership development and promoting accessibility.

Persons with disabilities often face societal barriers and disability evokes negative perceptions and
discrimination in our societies. As a result of the stigma associated with disability, persons with disabilities are
generally excluded from education, employment and community life which deprives them of opportunities
essential to their social development, health and well-being.

“Sport can change person with disability in an equally profound way by empowering them to realize their full
potential and advocate for changes in society. Through sport, persons with disabilities will acquire vital social
skills, develop independence, and become empowered to act as agents of change”, says, Ms. P. Madhavi Latha, a paraplegic wheelchair user who works for Scope International as Associate Vice President.

In a world where disabled persons are not consider to lead a normal life, Madhavi is exceptional and role model. She is a National Paralympic swimmer and a successful employee. She is the President of Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India, WBFI.

The training will focus on players, coaches and referees. This will be vital for long term sports development.
National and International Coaches and Trainers will be involved this December.
