* * Look Beyond the Pay Package..!
Salary is obviously the most important part of the negotiation, but do not ignore aspects such as job profile, grade, reporting boss, office location and so on.
“While compensation is important, it is critical that the negotiation is as much about the role and the `line of sight' that it offers.Choose roles that offer business impact. Do not compromise on that,“ adds Ajay Bhatt, Regional HR Director, Abbott India.
* * Do your Research on the Industry..!
A thorough insight into the company & the industry is a must before starting the negotiations.
Every company has a distinct organisational structure, and the payment structure varies with each sector. “Knowing the different remuneration structures will help you negotiate better,“ says Swapnil Kamat, CEO, Work Better.
* *Seek Information on Other Benefits..!
The candidate should know about the entire range of benefits before he or she starts nego tiating as part of the current offer. One must also know about all the employment engage ment programmes, additional facilities such as transportation, telephone reimbursements and so on, says Mahesh Bhalla, president of Qwikcilver Solutions.
** Never Falter..!
Throughout the negotiation, the candidate must appear confident and firm. From the body language, eye contact and voice modulation besides the right attitude and language, a candidate must focus on never faltering on any of these.
Only a strong belief in yourself can get the best out of a negotiation for you. But at the same time, listen carefully to what is being offered and do not take hasty decisions.
** Keep Long - Term Gains in Mind..!
An organisation that allows you to take measured risks for your career development offers you more than just the starting salary. Factor that in as you weigh the overall package.
“Ask pointed questions and seek clarity on values of the organisation. Also gain some idea about the people you would be working with if you decide to take up the offer,“ says Bhatt.
