The brand Amma gets
bigger in Tamil Nadu. After rolling out a slew of projects & services under
the name, Chief Minister Ms. J.J. Jayalalithaa on Friday announced sub- sidized
Amma (Mother) Cement to help low and middle income families, affected by a
steep rise in prices of cement.
A cement bag will be
sold at Rs. 190 per bag (50 kg) under the scheme.
A person who wants to
construct a 100 square feet house will get 50 bags, while another who wants to
build a 1500 square feet house can avail a maximum of 750 bags.
"I wish to state
that my government's initiative will reduce the burden on the weaker sections
extensively," Ms. Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
The release also said
Amma Cement will be made available at Rs. 220 per bag to constructions made
under the solar-powered green houses scheme &the Indira Awas Yojana Housing
Scheme.
According to the CM Ms. Jatalalitha, the plan is that 2 lakh metric tonne of cement
would be procured from private cement manufacturers every month. It will be
sold through 470 godowns spreading across corporations, municipalities, town
panchayats & panchayat unions in the state.
The buyers are
required to submit the certified plan permit of their buildings obtained from
agencies or / certificates issued by the village administrative officer /
revenue officer / panchayat union supervisor / panchayat union road inspector.
Those who want to renovate or / repair their houses can avail 10 to 100 bags of
the sub - sidized cement.
The undivided Andhra
Pradesh supplied one fourth of Tamil Nadu's total requirement of 17 to 18 lakh
metric tonne of cement every month. Of late, the cement manufacturers raised
the price of cement between Rs 80 and Rs 100 per bag, and each bag is now sold
at Rs 310 in Andhra Pradesh. As a result, the supply of cement bags from
neighbouring state has come down. "This has created a situation for the
local producers to hike the cement prices," Jayalalithaa said.
Tamil Nadu Cement
Corporation Limited (TANCEM will act as a nodal agency and Tamil Nadu Civil
Supplies Corporation & rural development and panchayat raj departments will
be the implementing agencies to sell the cement bags.
The federation of
panchayat level self-help groups will be roped in by the district collectors to
stock 400 bags and sell to the public through shops owned by the district
supply and marketing societies.
