There are a majority of people
who believe in Vaastu and probably there may be an equally large group of
people who don’t give much importance to it. Whatever maybe your take on Vaastu,
it’s definitely hard to ignore or overlook this ‘shastra’ if you are a home
buyer. ‘100% vaastu compliant ready to occupy flats’ is the bait used by
builders to lure potential customers in today’s times.
Invariably many fall prey for
this marketing gimmick. Before we delve deep into this aspect, let’s try to
comprehend what exactly is Vaastu?
The popular and probably the most
lucid definition is that its a scientific study of directions which aims to
extract the positive energy from the universe namely earth, water, air, sun and
sky to create a hospitable setting or / a place to live in. It is believed to
be an age old practice that lays down certain rules while constructing a house
so that good health, wealth and prosperity come into the house.
When we are talking about
construction of a house, we are not merely hinting at independent houses or bungalow.
In cities and even in smaller towns, you may seldom spot a vacant piece of land
nowadays.
With the population increasing at
a rapid pace, apartments have started coming up everywhere. It may not be an
exaggeration to state that independent houses may soon become obsolete in metropolitan
cities.
Vaastu – a tool to entice buyers..?
Real estate developers are
innovative enough to construct an apartment even on a tiny piece of land. One
of the basic tenets of vaastu shastra says that open space must be left all
around the building.
We often see flat owners parking
their cars on roads / pavements due to minuscule parking space inside their apartment
compound. So, can such a building be termed as 100% vaastu compliant?
By advertising so, they are
turning vaastu into a marketing gimmick instead of letting it remain as a
scientific tool.
We all know that flats imply a
cluster of houses. If they are in one building, then it’s known as an
apartment. If they are in the form of groups, then it becomes a gated
community.
Whatever be the case,
constructing a flat as per the principles of vaastu is a herculean task. In
case you manage to adhere to most of the vaastu rules, then the aesthetic
appeal of the flat or the building as a whole may get compromised.
Newspaper and TV ads scream about
vaastu compliant houses and many gullible buyers fall prey to such claims. When
there are a cluster of flats in one complex with a common wall separating two
houses, placement of kitchen in South East or North West or balconies towards north east
may not be feasible.
Next time you see such an
advertisement, make the effort to visit that place to see if any of the vaastu doctrines
listed below are adhered to:
- The site should be a good square or / a
rectangle if possible with South West corner equal to 90 degrees.
- Open space must be left all around the building. There should be
more open space in the north and the east compared to West and South.
- North, East or North East roads would do more good
with two gates, one in the East and the other in North.
- Ground levels should be slopping towards North
East and the levels in the South West should be higher than all other
sides.
- An open well or a bore well should
essentially be dug in the North East, before the construction takes place.
- The elevator
or the lift should not be facing the main entrance.
Some cues for potential
flat owners..
All the above rules cannot be practically applied while
constructing an apartment. But if Vaastu Shastra is concerned with only one
flat holder and not with the whole building, then experts say that it may prove
advantageous to follow these principles.
a) The heavy articles or goods should be kept along the
walls in the South or the West.
b) The North-East corners of every room need to be vacant. It
is advantageous to keep an earthen jar filled with water in such a spot.
Vaastu shastra – easy
application and how!
Let’s accept the fact that application
of Vaastu rules while constructing a flat is a huge challenge but it’s
definitely not so while building an independent house. Here, the owner has
unlimited freedom to build a 100% vaastu compliant house by adhering to each
and every rule lay down in the book.
There is no denying the fact that
Vaastu can be effectively used as a scientific tool by building a house that is
beneficial to its occupants with ample light and fresh air filling each and
every room of the house.
But remember, this can be
seamlessly done in an individual house rather than a flat.
Conclusion…!
Vaastu is an old practice and a
vast field of study that was evolved by learned men of the past. Like any other
science, vaastu is universal, rational, practical and utilitarian however its
applicability in today’s times remains a mammoth challenge.
