The Government and corporate sector should complement each other to move the country ahead -  creating a nation that offers equality and opportunity for all, said Mr. Ratan Tata, Emeritus Chairman, Tata Sons.

The Government’s role should be to build infrastructure, create an environment of safety & opportunity based on meritocracy.

At an interaction after receiving the MMA Amalgamations Business Leadership Award 2014 in Chennai, Mr. Ratan Tata, said the Government and the corporate sector have the “combined and converging” task of moving the country ahead.

Mr. Ratan Tata, also called for better coordination among Indian companies. “Indian businesses seem to frown on the success of others & pull each other down,” he said. How many collaborations or / research activities take place between industries and business leaders in the country, he asked.

“In the years I have been in business, it has been extremely difficult to get 20 business leaders in a room and keep them from talking about their own companies to taking a position on India as a whole,” said Tata.

Industry in India has to be more collaborative and more trusting of each other. This would help the country grow faster.

“When you go beyond the shores of India, there is no reason to feel incapable of leading an enterprise, if you operate in the right value system,” he said.

There is nothing in India that limits the corporate sector from thinking on a global scale. The limitations that existed prior to 1990s have been removed. Industry should “confront & compete”.

The Government should create a competitive environment & not handicap industry through “cess and taxes”. “Growth should be the byword of India of tomorrow,” said Tata.
