The Camber racing team of SRM University won the Maruti Suzuki SUPRASAEINDIA Students formula 2014 followed by the Octane racing team of college of Engineering, Pune and the Ojaswat racing team of Chandubhai’s Patel Institute of Technology, Gujarat.
The Madras Motor Race Track at Irrungatukottai was agog with excitement, anxiety and jubilation. The occasion was the third edition of Maruti Suzuki SUPRA SAE India Students Formula 2014 design competition where over 2000 engineering students from across the country had gathered to display and explain their prototype creations to the judges and other experts.
SUPRA SAE India is an international format design competition conceived to inculcate the design and manufacturing skills of engineering students from all over India.
Around two thousand engineering students from all over India along with the members of SAE, Maruti Suzuki and other auto industry giants participated in this three day event which has the ultimate goal of making India an international automotive hub.
The competition attracted 183 entries from all over India and based on very critical parameters 87 teams were chosen. Each team consisting 20 - 25 members. The total prize money is around Rs.10 lakh.
"Student teams from 87 colleges have entered the final stages of the SUPRA SAE India Student Formula competition this year. It is not just a boys' event. There are two all girls teams that are competing with their own race cars," said Rajesh Kumar, general manager for marketing and communications at Defiance Technologies Ltd.
The 87 prototype race cars would be subjected to various kinds of tests - noise, brakes and endurance etc. "The cars will be driven by a student team member and the cars will have to do five laps during which the time taken, fuel consumption and other parameters would be measured," said SAE India deputy director general K. Shriramchandran.
According to SUPRA SAE India convener S. Thirumalini, the event gives the students experience in designing as per specifications, sourcing of components, fabricating, costing and even marketing. "The maximum allowable spend on building the car is Rs.10 lakh. Till date, the lowest cost at which a race car was built is Rs.1 lakh,” she added.
The weight of the cars also has come down over the past two editions. "Over the past two events, the average weight of the cars has come down to 263 kg from around 400 kg due to use of different materials," Thirumalini said.
Unlike in the past two editions, where Maruti's 800cc engine was specified, this time the competing teams have to build their race cars with 610cc engines.
The students who participate in the competition have a definite edge over others in the job market as they gain practical experience - from designing a car to its launch and team work, said SUPRA SAEINDIA 2014 advisor N. Balasubramanian.
This program promotes real time Industry experience for students as they learn
ü work in teams
ü work to schedules
ü apply engineering concepts
ü computer analysis with design and simulation tools
ü Establish targets on costing and manufacturing a product.
The event was sponsored by Maruti Suzuki India Limited as the Title Sponsor and supported by Rajalakshmi Group of Institutions, Chennai. Other sponsors include Continental Automotive, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., BOSCH, ALTAIR, ANSYS, EATON, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., ARAI, Victora Tools and Roots.
The organizer of the Event, SAEINDIA - the Society of Automotive Engineers, India - is the largest Strategic Alliance Partner to SAE International, USA. SAE International is a global association of more than 138,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries from over 117 countries in the world. SAE's primary objectives are life-long learning and voluntary consensus standards development.
