SAE INDIA CONDUCTS STUDENT FORMULA AT CHENNAI

Competition for students to build formula cars

SAEINDIA,  The Society of Automotive Engineers India is  organizing the 3rd edition of SUPRA SAEINDIA Student Formula  from 18th  to 20th July 2014 at Madras Motor Race Track, Sriperumbudur.

SUPRA SAEINDIA is an international format design competition conceived to inculcate the design and manufacturing skills of engineering students fromall over India.  Students  from  SAEINDIA collegiate clubs from colleges across India, form  teams  and  create  a  virtual  design,  build  a prototype, manufacture and test their own formula type race car. The project fuels the exuberance of the youth by providing the student teams a platform to test their mettle, giving them a pragmatic exposure to real world challenges as faced in the industry. The goal of the competition is to provide the aspiring engineers a unique platform for entry level hands-on automotive design and manufacturing experience. Apart from engineering and design skills, the competition also assesses their capabilityfor team-work, entrepreneurship and management skills with a real life Industry work environment.

The event has three stages over a period of one year. The first stage is a Virtual Design Round which is an eliminating round and the second stage comprise series of training programs on Design Software, Manufacturing techniques, Sourcing, costing and driving to the students, enabling them to manufacture their cars. The teams which are successful in manufacturing their cars as per specifications will be eligible for the final event.

SUPRA SAEINDIA 2014 is the 3rd edition of the competition following the earlier two editions held at MMRT, Chennai in 2011 and Buddh International Circuit in 2012. Since the first edition, the no. of teams successful in building the car and making it to the final event has grown from 45 to 87. SUPRA SAEINDIA 2014 received 173 registrations for the first round of Virtual Design Competition with first 100 teams qualifying for the second stage. Out of the 100 teams, 87  have successfully completed the manufacturing and passed rigorous inspection reviews, making it to the final event.

According to Dr. S. Thirumalini, Convener, SUPRA SAEINDIA 2014, “This 3 day event at MMRT will see eminent industry experts evaluating the design and cost reports, marketing presentations, Technical Evaluation of the cars based on all parameters including acceleration, fuel economy, maneuverability and endurance.  The students are given onefull year to prepare and build their cars. This year 87teams from various colleges all over India are participating in the final competition”.

She further added, “In this process, students learn to develop a design, understand the process of new product development, industrial procurement, manufacturing, assembly and prototyping.
The objective of this event is to bring out the latent talent of students”.

Mr. N. Balasubramanian, Advisor, SUPRA SAEINDIA 2014 said, “Unique events such as SUPRA prepare Students to be more Industry ready. They learn how to tackle complex engineering problems, work as a team with greater result orientation. The students who have participated in the past editions have proved their mettle in domains such as vehicle dynamics, testing, new product development, etc. Today, large numbers of Supra alumni are employees of several world class organizations and contributing to large engineering programs”.

Mr. Asit K Barma, Chairman Media, Communications, Publications Board, SAEINDIA said, “Participants in the competition will need to drive their own cars, which they have conceived, designed and fabricated. The specification of the car frame and engine are not restricted so that the imagination, creativity and knowledge of the students are challenged. Students realize their talent through such an experience, making them proven candidates for the future as technocrats, entrepreneurs, designers, innovators and leaders.”

The event is sponsored by Maruti Suzuki India Limited as the Title Sponsor and supported byRajalakshmi Group of Institutions, Chennai. Other sponsors include Continental Automotive, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.,BOSCH, ALTAIRANSYS, EATON, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., ARAI, VictoraTools and Roots.
The organizer of the Event, SAEINDIA - the Society of Automotive Engineers, India - is the largest Strategic Alliance Partner to SAE International, USA. SAE International is a global association of more than 138,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries from over 117 countries in the world. SAE's primary objectives arelife-long learning and voluntary consensus standards development.
