CME at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute highlights lifestyle
modification to control Asthma & Allergy
Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease affecting 1% to 18% of the
population in different countries. It is characterized by variable symptoms
of wheeze, shortness of breath, chest tightness and/or cough. Allergic
asthma is the most easily recognized and commonly prevalent form of the
disease which often commences in childhood.

Asthma and Allergy in
today's world are leading public health problems imposing a huge medical and financial
burden on our community irrespective of age, sex and
socio-economic strata. In metropolitan cities like Chennai, due to the
increasing levels of pollution there is a significant rise in the number of
patients suffering from this disease.
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Chettinad Hospital & Research
Institute (CHRI) in association with Indian Academy of Allergy (IAA)
conducted a Continued Medical Education program on Current Perspectives in
the management of Asthma & Allergy. The event was inaugurated by Chettinad
University Vice Chancellor, Dr V. Raji and Dean, Dr K. Ravindran. Eminent
allergy experts like Dr K.S. Satish (Executive director, IAA), Dr B.R.
Ramesh (Vice President IAA), Dr P. Anand and Dr V.S. Advani (members IAA) in
association with renowned Pulmonologists like Dr Subramanian (Chettinad
Hospital and Research Institute), Dr Vishnu Sharma (AJ Institute of Medical
Sciences, Mangalore), Dr Narasimhan (Apollo Hospital, Chennai), Dr P.K.
Thomas (Fortis Malar, Chennai) and many others from various medical colleges
and hospitals across South India participated in the event.
The main focus of all deliberations was to enhance knowledge of the latest
allergy and asthma management strategies and narrow the gaps between optimal
clinical performance and patient outcomes.
