Telecom Commission
gives in-principle approval to full mobile number portability.
Cellphone subscribers
can retain their numbers when they relocate to any part of India, even if they
change operators, as the government approved the much-awaited one nation, one
number plan which will simplify mobile telephony for customers.
The Telecom
Commission, the highest decision making body in the telecom department, on
Friday approved full mobile number por tability (MNP), which will allow a
mobile user to keep the same mobile number & weed out the hassle of buying
another mobile connection when he moves out of his / her home state.
At present,
portability is limited to within the same service area, which means that a
customer in Chennai can change his service provider from Airtel to Idea or
Vodafone or Airtel.
If this subscriber
moves to another circle, say Mumbai, he /she needs to acquire a separate Mumbai
mobile number, else pay roaming charges, which are higher than the average call
tariff.
With full MNP, the
Airtel Chennai user can keep the same number but choose Vodafone and not pay
the roaming charges. MNP was introduced in January 2011 and till May, 2014 more
than 10 Crore Cellphone subscribers had requested to move to a new provider.
