Rarest of Rare Abdominal Surgery Performed at Kumaran Hospitals

A rarest of rare abdominal surgery was performed by Dr. P. Manimekalai, Dr. S. P. Shivakumar and a team of doctors at Kumaran Hospitals, Chennai on a 52-years old woman. A large uterine tumor weighing 15.6 kgs was removed and the patient has since recovered and discharged recently.
Announcing this at a media conference Dr. S. P. Shivakumar, Executive Director and Surgical Gastroenterologist at Kumaran Hospitals said,” Uterine tumors are common in women, but this tumor which in medical parlance is known as ‘Super Giant Uterine Fibroid’ was something which we have never seen or operated upon before. While checking with records from across the country and internationally, this fibroid would probably be the largest ever removed from the abdomen of a human being.”
The surgery was performed by a team of four doctors headed by Dr. P. Manimekalai, HOD - Obstetrics’ & Gynecology. The surgery took around three & half hours to complete. The huge tumor was seen arising from the uterus measuring 48 X 48 cms in size & was highly vascular, pressing upon the ureters producing bilateral hydronephrosis. The specimen weighed 15.6 kgs.
Dr. Shivakumar also announced that Kumaran Hospitals has now received the revered NABH accreditation.
