Fight
Against Intellectual Theft...
World
Intellectual Property Day, which will be observed Today (April 26), is an
effort to protect creativity and ingenuity from copycats
By Mr.
RAHUL SIDDHU
World
Intellectual Property Day is an endeavour to celebrate ingenuity as well as to
honour creators & innovators, whose works have been making the difference
for one and all.
It was in
the year 2000, when World Intellectual Property Organization thought of
safeguarding path-breaking creativity & decided to raise awareness about
how creativity and artistic works affect our daily life.
"World
Intellectual Property Day not only means that exclusive rights have been
granted to an individual or / to an organization
for some creative work or / discovery. But, also means that we are honouring
all those who have been working tirelessly to improve the quality of life
through their work "says Dr. Raj Baldev.
He further
adds that World Intellectual Property Day also inspires a lot of innovators as
they feel that their work will not be copied & misused by others.
"Having
a special day like the Intellectual Property Day provides a framework for
creators and innovators.Trademarks, patents and copyrights give recognition to
the ones who have done the hard work of creation.
Intellectual
property (IP) is extremely important for large corporations that spend billions
of dollars in R & D to create and materialise concepts. If they are not
protected, they will never be able to recover the costs involved in building
and executing such projects. The process of getting trademarks, copyrights
& patents has been made easier & transparent so that more and more
people can file for it over the years.
However,
the cost has been going up at the same time,"points out Sofia Dhawan,
owner of sofiaraj.com.
To mark
World Intellectual Property Day, celebrations are being organised across the
globe, including developing countries, including small countries such as
Bulgaria,Colombia Jamaica, Kenya & Papua New Guinea, which are all
celebrating the spirit of creativity.
Even in
India, celebrations to mark the day have started well in advance.
"Corporates
must be proactive in protecting its intellectual property in order to ensure
that like IP works best for the advantage of the business. This involves having
in place a mechanism to identify IP ; ensure its proper registration and
assuring timely action in respect of any threat" states Mr. Rahul
Chaudhry,Managing Partner, Lall Lahiri & Salhotra.
