Moving houses/offices

– a Revolution

Success of Iron woman Ms. Vaanmathi

in container lines

This was in 2003. And having gained expertise in the field, she was bold enough to start her own company and was born Makwell. There were only four employees in the beginning at its only unit but now the company has three units in Ennoor, Thiruvotriyur and Arakkonam providing direct employment to over 30 people and indirectly to over 100 employees.

Initially, she was faced with only discouragement but this was not new as she had already faced all bullying and mocking in her career. Yet she did not give up and her source of encouragement was her spouse who had always said, “You will achieve.”

Moreover, Vaanmathi herself was confidence personified and multi-talented tireless worker. She used to visit sites using any conveyance available – let it be TVS Moped, motor bike or car. The company began with servicing of the containers and later moved on to supplying moving offices/houses also.

Even now container servicing is the core business of the company, yet these moving houses / offices also shares major chunk of the turnover. And last year this division
could achieve a turnover of around Rs 2 crore. There is a good response for the units and more
players have entered the arena while the demand was also increasing. And there is every possibility
of a much higher turnover.

The reasoning is moving houses/offices for a construction company replaces the temporary
arrangements like thatched hut or tin-sheeted hut. These huts are time consuming as one has to remove and reconstruct at the place wherever new project commences. It becomes a laborious process whereas the bunk houses can be moved to any place without any assembling concerns.

How did she learn conversion of containers? During her employment, “a Delhi based construction company, namely RMC Concrete, queried whether we can build and supply a mobile housing unit at their work site.

We took up the challenge and completed the unit. I had the opportunity of implementing innovations in the unit.”

How much does it cost?
Asked about cost of the unit, she says it depends on the availability of the containers and their cost. Normally, the containers are available in sizes of 20 feet or 40 feet in length while breadth and height are standard at eight and 8-1 / 2 feet respectively. One can buy these containers at around Rs 1 lakh.

The containers are converted into different sizes of units with facilities and amenities as required
by the customers. Normally, the price of a basic moving house / office starts from Rs 3 lakh. These units are paneled and come with basic amenities including electrical fixtures and bath fittings, kitchen with top, table and chair, bed and air conditioning.

Kitchen top can be provided with Cuddappah slab or granite. In the earlier years, demand for these moving units was minimal but the requirement has grown significantly. But manufacturers of these houses / offices were also limited. We had done orders for clients from North like Pune, New Delhi, and Kolkatta.

We receive many enquiries from construction companies and civil contractors as the awareness on the product increased. This segment needs this product the most and the members have recognised it.

Future trend, plans
To a question about the trend, she was confident about the scope
for these bunk houses/offices. In the current scenario, she says new
potential arises in the form of farm houses and holiday resorts. She
cited orders from GRT Group for its resort and a farm house.

Eventhough 2013 appeared to be dull, she expects the New Year
2014 to be highly prolific as recent enquiries reveal. We are already
receiving many enquiries. That said, Vaanmathi believes this newly
identified product may exceed expectations and overtake core
business in terms of turnover. She also plans to carry out
innovations in future. While the demand for moving house/office is
growing, she is exploring prospects for a caravan type of business,
renting of these bunk houses, etc.

All said, there is no doubt Makwell will flourish under Vaanmathi and the leadership
quality in her will fetch national recognition and award.
