Win Top Honours at 2013 Platts Global Energy Awards
Vora Lauded for
Lifetime Achievement; Gail Takes Premier Project Award--
India’s expertise was
in the spotlight at the 2013 Platts Global Energy Awards, held in New York City
on December 13. Bipin Vora, engineer,
inventor and 39-year veteran of Honeywell’s UOP LLC,was honoured with a
Lifetime Achievement Award for his innumerable contributions to the industry
andGAIL (India) Limited won a Premier Project Award for its Dabhol–Bangalore
Gas Pipeline Construction Project.
The awards,
considered the “Oscars” of the energy industry and now in their 15thyear, are
hosted by Platts, a leading global provider of energy, petrochemicals, metals
and agriculture information.

Platts’ independent
panel of judges said that Vora, whowas nominated for the award by the Petroleum
Federation of India,had changed the energy industry from the ground up. Recognized globally for developing safe and
environmentally-friendly petrochemical processes, Vora earned 92 patents in the
U.S. and 200 internationally, and has authored more than 140 publications in
various trade and technical journals.
Products manufactured today employing technologies developed under his
leadership are valued at more than $10 million.
Voraretired in 2006 from UOP and continues to advise the firm on R&D
matters. He received his B.Sc. (Honors) from the University
of Mumbai and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of New Mexico. Vora won
one of three Lifetime Achievement Awardsbestowed at the event; his fellow
honorees were Jim Rogers, CEO of U.S. based Duke Energy, and Michael Peevey,
president of the California Public Utilities Commission.

Impressed by GAIL’s
success in overcoming diverse challenges to create a key component of the
country’s Natural Gas Grid, the judges chose GAIL as the winner of the award
for Premier Project – Construction. Its
Dabhol-Bangalore Pipeline, which commenced construction in 2010 and was completed
in 2013, acts as common carrier between the western and southern parts of India
for companies such as Reliance, Shell, PLL and ONGC, thus integrating the
country’s entire gas market. Besides
being completed on time, the project was also on budget and, thanks to careful
planning and project management, achieved cost savings nearing 40%. The judges applauded GAIL’s strategic
thinking and perseverance in bring efficiency to India’s gas grid.
The two awards were
presented at a black-tie gala at the Waldorf Astoria in midtown Manhattan
emceed by CNBC television anchor Amanda Drury and attended by nearly 500
guests. Vora personally accepted his
Lifetime Achievement Award. Representing
GAIL and accepting its award was Jayanta Sinha, president of GAIL Global (USA.)
Indian companies also
counted among the finalists for the 2013 Global Energy Awards. Elango P of
Cairn India Ltd. and Sudhir Vasudeva of Oil & Natural Gas Corp Ltd.were
among the contenders for CEO of the Year. That award went to Harold Hamm of
Continental Resources,a U.S.-based independent exploration and production
company, which also won Company of the Year.
GAIL (India) Limited was also a finalist for the Midstream Industry
Leadership award, which went to Switzerland’s Puma Energy; and Adani
Enterprises Ltd. was among the finalists for Rising Star – Company, an award
won by Nodal Exchange, a U.S. commodities exchange whose innovations in
offering future contracts resulted in astounding growth.
