Diamond
Jubilee Celebrations of New College
To
focus on Industry-Academic Collaboration
The
New College, established in 1951, with 200 students in two Intermediate
sections, has over a period of 60 years, made tremendous strides to gain the
status of a leading Postgraduate and Research Institution, with a current
strength of 4746 students, in 20 UG, 11 PG, 6 M.Phil., and 7 Ph.D programmes.
The Vice President of India, Honorable Mr. M.Hamid Ansari will inaugurate the Diamond Jubilee
celebrations on Tuesday 12th November at Chennai.
The
New College has plans to aggressively grow in terms of various courses and also
focus on Industry- Academic collaboration in the coming years. The college has
envisioned twinning programmes with reputed International Universities /
Institutions; to encourage research, consultancy and expansion programmes. It
will also upgrade infrastructure to International Standards; design inter
disciplinary courses with enhanced choice of electives and focus to increase
the student strength to 20,000 over the next decade.
According
to Mr, U.Mohamed Khalilullah , Chairman,The New College,"the growth
is not only in terms of number of students, but also in academic quality and
curricular diversity, relevantly framed to meet the needs of society and to
enhance employability of students. This is evidently reflected in the review of
performance of the college in autonomous educational management with
appreciation and commendation by the UGC Expert Committee in 2012 and
re-accreditation with "A" Grade, granted by the National Assessment and
Accreditation Council in 2010. The untiring efforts of the stakeholders-the
management, staff, students and parents in quality enhancement and sustenance,
did bring covetous recognition and prestige to the college, both within and
outside India".
Mr.
A.Mohamed Ashraf, Hony. Secretary & Correspondent, The New College, added "the
Management has decided to erect a Commemorative Block, integrating classical
and modern innovative architecture, for providing the-state-of the- art
infrastructure to students. The general library, digital library and smart
class rooms with ICT facility will add to the learning environment which
includes, a conference hall, administrative offices of the parent body MEASI
and also of the New College Alumni Trust. The management is committed to the
task of constantly upgrading the infrastructure in the college, as required by
the changing times and technology".
Unlike
other leading colleges which select the academically best and aim to get the
best results and top rankers, the primary strength of New College lies in the
fact that the institution provides opportunities for academically backward
students and first generation learners from the minority communities and other
economically weaker sections of the society, to pursue higher education and
mold them into responsible students who are competent and capable of facing
competition successfully.
Centrally
located, with an excellent infrastructure, the college is one of the leading
minority institutions in the State of Tamilnadu, with an emphasis on providing
education at a fee affordable to the economically weaker sections of the
society. Till date, more than 60000 students have obtained their UG and PG,
M.Phil and Ph.D degrees from the institution so far.
The
management, befittingly in appreciation of the achievement over the past 60
years, is celebrating Diamond Jubilee of the college on November 12ththe
celebration is to focus on challenges ahead in fostering quality education in
the contemporary, unprecedented competitive, globalized world and to work out
strategies for the future.
A
number of cultural and literary events, seminars and intellectual interactive
sessions programmed to reflect on issues surging in higher educational
institutions, and remedies to resolve problems and challenges. In addition, the
celebration shall offer a grateful tribute to the stalwarts and savants of
society, who with great foresight and missionary zeal established the college
to uplift the under privileged and backward sections of the society.
