Last week's mild
earthquake in the national capital was a gentle reminder once again that
disaster is always waiting to happen, and not every one of them comes with
warnings such as Cyclone Phailin.
Unfortunately,
quake-proofing has not really caught on as a must have in our real estate
frenzy even though the world has to offer some exceptional examples.
Like the San
Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. What replaced an obsolete truss bridge has many
elements to help it withstand a major earthquake with minimal damage.
The central feature
of the span is a 2,047-foot-long single-tower self-anchored suspension bridge
of an asymmetrical design. Elsewhere in the world, architects are working with
shape-memory alloys that can remember their original shape & get back to it
even after they are twisted out of shape by a quake or / any other disaster.
