I always avoid recommending new fund to investors. We have taken a stand that to recommend a scheme we wish to have at least 3 year track record. But, occasionally we deviate from this is only when the opportunities are compelling.
Mutual fund portfolio we construct for investors comprises of 2 parts.
For a stable portfolio we pick schemes and it will be part of their core portfolio.
To pop up portfolio return we pick schemes and they will be part of satellite portfolio.
In Satellite portfolio when return targets exceeds due to secular bull market we advise our investors to book profits in a tranche to protect their profits. With markets are in volatile zone and likely to be so for next 5 to 6 months. If investors cherry pick stocks based on the valuation gaps that exist between top performing stocks and the rest of the market, you will be handsomely rewarded.
Such stocks will be available at bargain prices till markets identify such stocks. These stocks are value picks and have potential to deliver good return.
If you look at BSE 100 only 20 stocks are trading close to their all time high and rest of 80 stocks are quoting at 25% above their 52 week lows.
If you are not in a position to pick stocks directly here is an opportunities to tap.
ICICI Pru has come out with new fund ICICI Pru Value Fund – Series I. A close ended equity scheme.
In this scheme due to favourable market condition if stocks in the portfolio moves up by certain percentage points the fund will book profits and declare divided. This fund has no growth option it means the profit will be distributed to the investors. At the end of three –year period the fund will be closed and entire money will be returned to investors.
In ICICI stable somewhat similar fund is ICICI Pru Discovery. That fund in 2009 calendar year, delivered 128% return mainly based on its value strategy. It means an investment of Rs. 1 lakh appreciated to Rs. 2.28 lakh within a year.
Hence investors with believe in value theme can consider investment in this fund.
