The South
India Hotels & Restaurants Association (SIHRA) had the 62nd Annual General
Meeting at the GRT Convention Centre, Chennai, recently.
The following persons were elected as the Office
Bearers for the year 2013-2014.

Speaking
at the AGM, Mr. K. Syama Raju, President, SIHRA, explained the pivotal role played by the Hospitality
Industry in the development of infrastructure and contributing significantly to
the state exchequer through payment of various taxes and generating employment which is second to the
Agricultural sector. He also stated that despite global economic recession, the
Indian Hospitality industry had a growth
of 6% and the foreign exchange grew at 8
%. Though there is slow down in Foreign
travel arrivals, there is an increase of
Domestic travelers to tune of 13.6
million in 2012. There is also increase of hotels inventories especially under
Budget category in Tier I, II and III
cities in South India. It is hoped that
with the aggressive campaign by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India to
achieve their target of 15 million tourists by 2020, the slow growth of foreign
Tourists arrival will bridge the gap
between Foreign and Domestic Tourist arrivals.

SIHRA has
donated a sum of Rs. Eleven Lakhs for the Uttarkhand Chief Minister, Relief
Fund.
The
meeting ended with a positive note that in the years to come the
Hospitality industry will play a pivotal role for the economic
growth of the nation and a fervent
plea was made to various state
Governments and other official bodies to have a pragmatic view
in the introduction of various taxes and levies that affects the growth
of this sector.
The South
India Hotels & Restaurants Association, (SIHRA) is a 62 year old eminent Trade Association
for the Hospitality Industry in southern India comprising the states of Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala,Tamilnadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. SIHRA
has over 1100 Hotel and Restaurant Members covering the smallest stand-alone
Restaurants to the largest 5 star deluxe hotels. SIHRA is one of the four
Promoter of the all India apex
hospitality trade Association, Federation
of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India FHRAI.
SIHRA
takes up the causes of its Members with various state Governments as well as
with other bodies and acts as the official spokesman for the Hospitality
Industry. It also acts as an advisory body to the state Governments in South
India towards formulating their respective tourism policies.
