WPI Inflation rises to 4 month high of 5.79 % in July, 2013


May WPI inflation revised to 4.58 % from 4.7%

The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rose to a 4 month high of 5.79 % in July against 4.86 % in the previous month as food items, particularly vegetables, turn costlier. Besides, fuel prices also showed a rising tendency in inflation & manufactured items saw a bit of increase in the rate of price rise over the period.

The rate of price rise had stood at 7.52 % in July, 2012.

Inflation in vegetables soared to 46.59 % in July versus 16.42 % in the previous month. It was as low as 5.21 % in May. 

In fact, vegetable prices declined in March & April year-on-year and economists had warned that time that these may spike again once rains come due to supply disruption.

Quite contrast to it, fruit prices fell 4.8 % in July year-on-year against  0.43 % fall in the previous month.

Within food, the rate of price rise in onion stood surged to 144.94 % in July against 114 % in June.

This caused overall food inflation to rise to 11.91 % against 9.74 % over the period.

Inflation in fuel and power rose to 11.31 % against 7.12 % over the period.

Manufactured items saw inflation rising marginally to 2.81 % in July against 2.75 % in June.
