In its endeavour to provide the needy children of truck drivers and transporters with educational assistance, Shriram Foundation, a social arm of the Shriram Group, yesterday launched a nationwide “Education Support Scheme” at Chennai.

Through this scheme, Shriram Foundation offered financial assistance and scholarships to 203 deserving children of transporters and truck drivers aged between 11 and 17 years. The scholarship distribution ceremony took place at D.G. Vaishnav College, Chennai. This was the first instalment of this initiative that began from Chennai and will be carried out across the country.

Mrs. Vidya Shankar, Honorary CEO and Trustee of Shriram Foundation & Chief Guest at the function said, “It is common knowledge that education is one of the most important pillars of a nation. Often, the children of truck drivers and transporters are deprived of quality education, which is one of their fundamental rights. Through Education Support Scheme, we aim to provide educational support the needy section of our transporter fraternity. This is a step to help such deserving students to learn and prosper in this competitive world.”

Earlier, a similar programme was undertaken by Chennai Goods Transports Association (CGTA) in association with Shriram Transport Finance Company, wherein scholarships were offered to 150 students.
