The construction industry is one of the largest economic
activities contributing to India's development. India has been witnessing
tremendous growth in building and construction sector for the past 5 years.
With the increase in income levels, there are also changes in the
life styles of various sections of the society. While this
provides ample opportunities, it is also putting enormous pressure on resources
- like energy, water, materials etc., The stakeholders of the industry have a
vital role to play in preserving the environment. The Indian Green Building
Council (IGBC) was formed in the year 2001 to address many of these aspects.
IGBC is represented by all stakeholders of construction
industry comprising of Architects, Builders&Developers, Corporate, Designers,
Facility managers, Government, Institutions, Nodal agencies, Product
manufacturers & suppliers, Service Consultants, etc.
The vision of the council to enable a sustainable built
environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in
sustainable built environment by 2025.
With a modest beginning of 20,000 sq.ft of green footprint
in the country in the year 2001, today over 2,007 green buildings with a
footprint of over 1.40 Billion sq.ft are being constructed all over India.
IGBC-Kolkata chapter
with the support of all the stakeholders in playing a catalytic role in
spearheading the green building movement in the State. As on date, Kolkata has
over 60 registered green building projects with a green building footprint of
over 26 million sq.ft and 75 members to propagate this initiative.
In order to further facilitate the spread of the Green
Building movement and provide new business opportunities in the State, IGBC is
organizing a two-day Conference on Green Buildings on 1 & 2 August 2013:
ITC Sonar at Kolkata.
