The housing sector in India is growing
at a rapid pace & contributing immensely to the growth of the economy. This
augurs well for the country and now there is an imminent need to introduce
green concepts & techniques in this
sector, which can aid growth in a sustainable manner.
The Census of India has estimated that
by 2026, urban population would rise to around 53.5crore or 38.2% of the total population. This means
an addition of 25 crore persons or /
near doubling of urban population in nearly two decades from now with reference

By 2030, the country is expected to
have 68 cities with a population of more than one million, 13 cities with more
than 4 million people & 6 megacities with populations of 1 crore or more, with
Mumbai & Delhi among the biggest cities worldwide. (Source: Ministry of

Today, the living standards of people
are changing, affordability of people is improving, and therefore adequate
housing and infrastructure are at most important for Nation. We have a
challenge in both demand and supply. The only solution to this is sustainable
habitats.
The housing industry in the country
needs to provide a shift towards sustainable consumption and production to meet
the goals of sustainable development.
In the above context, the Indian Green
Building Council (IGBC) is making rapid strides in greening the residential
sector. As on today, IGBC has over 690 green homes projects with a
built-up-area of 638 Million square feet which are in different stages of
construction.
The need of the hour is to promote
green habitats which facilitate in
addressing national issues including water efficiency, energy efficiency,
reduction in fossil fuel used in commuting, handling of consumer waste,
conserving natural resources &
ensuring occupant health, happiness and well-being.
In this regard, IGBC is organising
exclusive 2 day conference on Green Apartments on 12 and 13 July 2013 at
Shangri - La, New Delhi. This conference encourages passionate members in reaching
the green agenda to the residential community. Leading national and
international experts will share their thoughts and perspectives on how to
foster and promote sustainable habitats to the present & future
generations.
