The great 19th century architect of
skyscrapers, Louis Sullivan, promoted an overriding precept to
architectural design: “Form follows
function”.
Among the philosophies that have influenced modern
architects and their approach to
building design are rationalism, empiricism, structuralism, post structuralism,
and phenomenology.
New Concept..!
In the late 20th century a new concept
was added to those included in the compass of both structure and function, the
consideration of sustainability.
To satisfy the modern ethos a building
should be constructed in a manner which is environmentally friendly in terms of
the production of its materials, its impact upon the natural and built
environment of its surrounding area and the demands that it makes upon
non-sustainable power sources for heating, cooling, water and waste management
and lighting.

During the last two decades of the
twentieth century and into the new millennium, the field of architecture saw the rise of specializations
within the profession itself by project type, technological expertise or
project delivery methods.
Useful service..!
In addition, there has been an
increased separation of the ‘design’ architect from the ‘project’ architect
within some
architectural office collaborations. Completing
50 years of useful service by your organization is a very great achievement and
those who have achieved feat should be honoured. In your profession, it is the
senior members / architects who set the trends and mould junior members. It is
the senior members who give the profession a larger and correct image.
The future of our Republic depends to a
great extent on our maintenance of justice by you and unsullied. It can be
achieved only by the proper check of the members of your profession, which
should receive the approval of all right thinking people.
What is of utmost importance is to maintain and
foster the confidence of your clients
who enter the portals of
your office with lot of hope, expectation, trust and confidence.
The said table will fall, the moment the confidence is
lost. It is the duty of an architect as
a cautious expert of the nation and watchdog of the society to make his clients
respect law / requirements, procedures and the constitutionally established
authority.
Let me conclude my speech that my fond
hope that the deliberations in this programme will not only
enrich you all but the knowledge gained
should enrich the society as well.
