India is currently facing the uphill task of building & modernising her infrastructure involving planning and construction of highways, expressways, bridges, airports, ports, metro and mono rails, power projects, irrigation facilities, etc.

Beginning with the National Highway Development Program involving construction of Golden Quadrilateral and East - West - North - South Corridors, huge expenditure is being incurred on building physical infrastructure in India.

During the 11 th Five Year Plan (2007 - 12) a staggering sum of US $ 514 billion (Rs. 20,50,150 crores) was spent on 10 sectors of infrastructure.

The Government of India (GOI) is now planning to double this investment in the 12 th Five Year Plan (2013- 2018) by infusing a massive investment of around US $ 1024 billion.

Since concrete has been recognised as one of the essential components of infrastructure development in India it will be essential to evolve & adopt innovative solutions for planning and execution of concrete infrastructures, especially when huge expenditure is planned in the immediate future.

Although there are a few examples of adaptation of certain recent advances in the sphere of concrete technology such as highstrength and high-performance concrete,

Considering the crucial importance of infrastructure development for the Indian economy, the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) has decided that the main theme of the Innovative World of Concrete (IWC) being held in Hyderabad on 23 to 26 October 2013 will be "Innovations in Concrete for Meeting Infrastructure Challenge

To create awareness amongst the construction engineers about modern concrete construction practices, an International Seminar and Exhibition on ‘Modernization of Concrete Practices – ISEMCC-82’ was jointly organized by the Structural Engineering Research Centre and Anna University during 21 to 27, January, 1982 in Chennai. It generated great enthusiasm among the participants and a resolution was adopted at the conclusion of ISEMCC - 82 to form the “Indian concrete Institute.”

The Institute was registered as a society on 7th September, 1982 with headquarters in Chennai and has been in service to the industry and the professionals, since then, with the following objectives.
