In India, Daily newspapers sell a total of 4.8 crore copies and account for 81 % of the circulation of newspapers, weekly newspapers and magazines, according to the latest report released by the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC)
Split by language, Hindi dominates the daily newspaper market, with a total circulation of just over 1.5 crore copies a day, followed by English newspapers, with total circulation of above 90 lakh copies.
Incidentally,The Economic Times has the 5th highest circulation amongst English newspapers, with The Times of India in first place, followed by The Hindu and Hindustan Times. The next largest language after English is Marathi, with ABC certified publications circulating 54 lakh copies.
Malayalam newspapers are in fourth, selling nearly 40 lakh, followed by Tamil and Telugu with 39 lakh and 37 lakh copies respectively.
Bengali newspapers are in 7th position, selling about 27 lakh copies. Kannada publications at 20 lakh copies,Punjabi with 8.4 lakh and Oriya with 4.8 lakh round out the top 10 languages.
The report covers the period July-December 2012. For the next audit period, January to June 2013, ABC has changed its system of appointing auditors to audit circulation figures of member publications,for greater transparency.
