Years back,
brick rubbles, lime mortar, Indian gall nut, jaggery, oil, etc. were
used as coating
in weathering course to protect the roof.
In those days,
clay tiles, which would absorb heat and water, were laid over the roof. To
protect
the roof from
this impact, this weathering course called ‘Surukki’ was applied.
That was the first generation technology.
Some 15 years back, another tiling method, claimed to be
heat proof,
emerged. That
was the second generation technology. It used lime or calcium,
magnesium
sulphate, rice husk, paper mache. But due to chemical base, it
turned a failure.
Exposure of any chemical to sun and light will dilute its
property and
character. As a result, these tiles were a failure as they developed
cracks within
three years.
Crystal based
tiles are the third generation (3 G) technology. These tiles used
zirconium – a
kind of sand – for coating on top of the tiles. This sand particle
has the capacity
to withstand temperature upto 1,100°c and a gas furnace to
heat upto this
level is available only in Gujarat. This particle is used in rocket
technology.
This is a proven
technology and that is why one does not feel the pinch of
the heat on the
terrace at even 110°. We perform free live demonstration to
our clients on
this aspect.
