An Article from Our Building
and Construction, April 2013
“Argil and myself would have got many awards like National Award,
Four
Times Excellence Award, Best Cool Roof Tile Award and I have been
proud to
be a Rotarian, but I will always cherish the customer
satisfaction. The best of
them may be the appreciation from the Bannari Amman Group
chairman, Thiru
Balasubramaniam, who invited me to his place personally and was
full of praise
for the product while expressing the fullest satisfaction with
our product.”
Human activities in the name of
urbanization have led to environmental collapse. Resultant impacts are global
warming, erratic monsoon and mercury shoot-up. Consequently, every summer one
finds the temperature overtaking the previous record and the human race had to
bear the brunt of sun’s fury below its roof.
In the recent structures, another
issue that crops up is water seepage during winter however good the
construction is and despite proper centering and curing processes. However, the
man has the knack
of overcoming the situation
through invention of new products and technology.
Thus evolved were terracotta tiles
and chemically treated cool roof tiles. Conventionally, our ancestors applied
weathering course over the roof that would be prepared using lime mortar,
jaggery, oil and some Indian medicinal elements like Indian gallnut. But these
were mostly temporary measures. Not only that, the process is also tedious.
Even if collective steps were
initiated to resolve these issues, they were not
longstanding remedies. The
situation did not change even after the emergence of apartments as the top
floor would always be the headache for the builder. Even middle floors
face seepage problem in bathrooms.
Until recently, there were no proper and complete solutions
to the issue. But now the new generation tiles – naturally treated, zirconium
coated tiles answer the problem. Mr C.D.S.Ravichandran of CDS Agencies
classifies the new generation tiles as third generation tiles chronologically,
while chemically treated tiles belong to the second generation and ancestral
technique of weathering course is the first generation treatment. CDS deals
with Argil Cool Roof Tiles and is a distributor all over south India.
It was accidental when Ravichandran, basically a civil
engineer, bought these tiles from Argil Ceramic for his own use when he went to
Gujarat. He was a builder and flat promoter at that time and used this product
in one of his apartments where he himself stays on the top floor.
Mr C.D.S.Ravichandran, CDS Agencies |
That was in 2006. After seven years, he, now a full time
Argil distributor since 2010, says even now he runs his air-conditioner at his
house for one hour only and finds the room cooler thereafter thanks to Argil
tiles. Added advantage with these tiles is seepage prevention. When he first
bought the tiles, they were being imported and supplied. But now these 8 ” x
8”, 6mm tiles are being manufactured indigenously in the Gujarat factory with
Spanish technology.
The third generation technology uses zirconium-titanium
processed under crystalization technique. Zirconium- titanium is a kind of sand
hitherto derived from Spain and is now found in Thoothukudi. This material,
which melts only at 1,100°c temperature and reflects
85 percent of heat, is being used as a coating at the bottom of the rockets
that carry satellites.
Ravichandran says the product is
proven technology and we have demonstrated the quality at the site.
“We don’t go by the certificate as
the proof of quality but by the testimonials of our customers. And we do
on-site testing of the tiles.”
He cites the accolades from one of
the leading industrialists from Coimbatore. Asked about the best moment of his
successful business adorned by many awards, he considers the rave review of
Bannari Amman Group chairman to be the one.
He says, “Argil and myself would
have got many awards like National Award, four times Excellence Award, Best
Cool Roof Tile Award and I have been proud to be a Rotarian, but I will always
cherish the customer satisfaction. The best of them may be the appreciation
from the Bannari Amman Group chairman, Thiru S.V.Balasubramaniam, who invited
me to his place personally and was full of praise for the product while
expressing the fullest satisfaction with our product. The Group is one of the
most important clients of CDS. Now the entire group is covered under Argil cool
roof tiles.”
Being a Rotarian for 25 years with
inclination towards social service, Ravichandran, an ardent lover of nature and
greeneries, is conscientiously taking efforts to conserve and rebuild our
environment and nature over the course of his business deals.
Yes! He plants trees at the places
of all his customers. In the event of non-availability of space at his
customer’s place which may mainly be apartments, the plants are grown and
maintained at Isha
Foundation’s Project GreenHands.
CDS’s esteemed clientele list
includes Doshi Housing, Spic & Span Construction, Harini Builders and SDK
Construction, RAMS construction, Corner stone foundation,..its go on. It has
established its market all over Tamil Nadu. Now it targets Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka and Kerala.
In Ravichandran’s own words
– “I have already cooled Tamil Nadu. Future plan is to cool all the buildings
and my next target is cool Andhra.., cool Karnataka…, cool Kerala.”
The company’s business has grown multifold in the three
years of operation since its inception. Ravichandran expects this growth to
continue in the coming years.
