The suffering from deficiency of vitamin D due to lack of
exposure to sunlight is called Apartment Syndrome.
Doctors are worried that an increasing number of children
in Chennai are suffering from deficiency of vitamin D.
While vitamin D is found only in traces in breast milk,
the natural way the body produces it is through exposure to sunlight.
The best thing by not letting the child play in the
scorching sun.
Apartment Syndrome..!
Doctors say did the right thing by exclusively feeding
breast milk, but keeping the baby always indoors was not the ideal thing to do.
Dr. Saradha Suresh, Director, Institute of Child Health,
said, The hospital sees just one such case a year. But, children's hospitals
and paediatric wards across the city are seeing a lot of children with low
levels of vitamin D. It is surprising
that in a city where we have plenty of sunlight throughout the year, children
are suffering from this deficiency. We call it the apartment syndrome"

Apartment culture..!
A new bone eater or bone
crusher disease has broken out in multistory building of urban areas. Thanks to
apartment culture. Completely closed air-conditioned rooms, no entry to
sunlight! Reasons are enough to get osteoporosis at young age.
A reason study in Chennai city
showed Children who live in apartments had shown osteoporosis symptoms. The
study revealed shocking results, when 10 months old baby was tested after
seeing his bowed leg by mother, found that vitamin D content in his blood was
nil.
vitamin D is found in traces
from few sources & only source is sunlight.
Dr.Sharada suresh added ''
Keeping the infant always indoors has resulted this syndrome, i.e softening of
bone, leading to easy frature or deformity. Though we have lot of sunlight
available throughout the year, doctors are coming across many children with
vitamin D deficiency in paediatric outpatient departments".
so, do not restrict the children to be abandoned among 4
walls. Exposing them to plenty of
sunlight is the solution to avert this problem.
