According to the Working Group on Rural Housing for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007 to 2012), the estimated total housing shortage in the urban areas, at the beginning of the 11th Plan period was about 24.71 million units and is likely to have gone up to 26.53 million units by 2012.

Now, the Indian real estate sector is largely unregulated with consumers often unable to procure complete information or  / enforce accountability on builders and developers / promoters in the absence of effective regulation.

Housing depends on the right sizing & right pricing and this varies with the context. It is important that practitioners make informed choices on appropriate locations, product mix, sizing & pricing, construction technology, construction management practices, materials & specifications, etc...!
