According to a 2011 Global Software Piracy Study, The number of Indians making use of pirated software declined by merely 1% during 2011 as against 2010, .
This study has been done by independent firm BSA (Business Software Alliance) and it further elaborated that almost 63% of Indians used pirated software as compared to 64% last year.
Although the rate of pirated software use has gone down slightly, the commercial value of such piracy rose in the last one year due to the surge in sales of personal computers. India sold almost 1.1 Crore PCs during 2011.
Mr. Lizum Mishra, Director, BSA India, said, “The commercial value of software piracy was $ 270 crore in 2010 that increased to $ 290 corbillion in 2011 as prices of such software also increased during the year.”

* The study also said that India sells more of pirated software than legal software. Legal software sales stood at $ 172 crore during 2011 and Indians were among the lowest spenders on legal software for every new PC purchased.
* The study has been conducted in 38 nations, consisting the US, China, the UK, Russia, Brazil, France, Japan, Italy, Mexico and Germany among 14,702 users.
