Chennai Corporation : Property tax may be hiked

A possible hike in property tax rates in Chennai Corporation  areas. It for additional funds for infrastructure development in expanded areas of the Chennai Corporation &  strengthening educational institutions run by Chennai Corporation. These are likely to top the agenda at the Chennai Corporation's budget for 2012-2013.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on taxation and finance Mr. K. Santhanam will present it, while Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy will make the opening remarks.

According to some senior officers in Chennai Corporation, the discussion on the budget would be held on the same day -a change from the usual practice of having the discussion after a day's break.

According to a former councillor of Chennai Corporation, “The rules for conduct of the Chennai Corporation Council were drawn up in 1996 when the civic body council was elected after a gap of 23 years. At that point of time, all the political parties had decided to follow procedures similar to those in the Tamilnadu State Assembly. That is how Zero hour and question hour came to be”
During the last time, the ADMK had majority in the council, they had also provided for an additional day for discussions on the budget.
