In the year 2006, December 20 the UN (United Nations) passed a resolution to designate November 14 as World Diabetes Day.
The day aims to increase an awareness of the effects of diabetes and its complications amongst the general public & professionals in a range of sectors. It is also hoped that the increased awareness will lead to more resources to fight the causes of diabetes and promote researches into improved treatment options.
According to Dr V. Mohan, Founder President, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, "The factors that promote obesity, that promote diabetes are increasing all the time. Today, 30-40% of the School students was obese. This is the case right from the LKG. Obesity is a direct fore runner of diabetes"
The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation and its member associations around the world, including the American Diabetes Association, Diabetes UK, Canadian Diabetes Association, Diabetes South Africa, Diabetes Australia, Diabetes New Zealand and the Diabetic Association of India. These organizations arrange events at international, national and local levels.
Dr T.Devanathan, the Chairman of WinTV, said "Role of Media is to increase the awareness on the seriousness of diabetes, its complications and the value of its management and prevention"
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, a registered dietitian can create a simple eating plan tailored just for you, taking into account your weight, medicines, other health problems and lifestyle you may have.
