The French firm, Pilote, which made the world's first caravan in 1962, is driving its Super luxury Caravans into India through a JV (Joint Venture) with Delhibased Mega Group to set up a distribution and service network across the country.
The JV, Mega Motoren & Lifestyles, will launch these caravans on diesel engines and chassis coming from Mercedes Benz and Fiat stable.
According to Mr. Mudit Srivastava, CEO, Mega Motoren, " The population of over 50,000 customers owning luxury cars in India is a ready market for such vehicles. We plan to launch these vehicles in Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad initially and spread them to 6 cities by January, 2012 with all sales and service support"
Besides individual customers, the Mega Motoren is negotiating with tourism bodies of states such as Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala, which have high number of foreign tourists visiting. The company is targeting sales of nearly 40-50 caravans in the first year.
The market for this type of vehicles in India is extremely small with sales of a few hundred caravans. Their major clients had been Bollywood stars, politicians, entrepreneurs and rich tourists.

* All the vehicles will be fully imported from France.
* Its prices start at Rs 75 lakh and go up to Rs 2 crore, based on specifications and customisation.
* Th length of luxury Caravans could be six meters, going up to nearly 8.6 meters.
