Green building movement in India

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is making rapid strides in advancing the Green Building concept through the involvement of all the stakeholders of the construction industry. The movement has evoked tremendous response amongst the various stakeholders. The vision of IGBC is to usher in a green building movement in India and to facilitate India become one of the world leaders in Green Buildings by 2010.
As on October, 2011 about 1,285 projects in India have registered under the IGBC Rating programme, with a total footprint of 84.90 Cr sq. ft.
IGBC Rating Programme..!
Indian Green Building Council’s (IGBC) has launched an exclusive rating programme for homes - IGBC Green Homes. This rating system is designed for rating new residential buildings, such as Individual homes, Gated communities and High rise residential apartments, etc.,
IGBC Green homes:
* No of registered projects: 353 projects
* Built up space: 34.90 Cr sq. ft.
Green building is one which incorporates several green features, such as effective use of existing landscapes, use of recycled and environmental friendly building materials, use of non-toxic materials, efficient use of water, use of energy efficient and eco-friendly equipment, use of renewable energy and indoor air quality for human comfort.
Benefits of Green Building
The major benefits in going for Green buildings are: -
* Tremendous reduction in operation and maintenance cost of the building, to the extent of 25 – 30% right from day one
* Intangible benefits like, enhancing indoor air quality leading to higher productivity of occupants.
