Farm land reforms: CII Says other states follow Punjab & Rajasthan

Industry chamber Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) called for replication of farm land reforms initiated by Rajasthan and Punjab by other states,

CII in a  statement  said, ''Wehas been a strong advocate of legalising the leasing of agricultural land on long tenure basis through a legislation,"

CII National Council on Agriculture Chairman Rakesh Bharti Mittal said , The   Rajasthan and Punjab states have increased the lease period and ensured the owner's right on his land, which is a welcome step. The Government of Rajasthan has agreed to a 30 year lease (15+15), while Punjab has left it open ended as per mutual agreement between the lessor and lessee and this is a good beginning.

The average size of landholding in India has declined from 2.63 hectares in 1996 to just 1.06 hectares, the CII pointed out, adding that around 60% of households possess less than one hectare of land for farming.
This has seriously affected the scale of operation, crop diversification and scope of aggregation of farm produce.
