West Bengal government and Kolkata Builders led by the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India -Bengal (CREDAI-Bengal) are contemplating joining hands to develop about five mini satellite townships covering 500-1,000 acres in and around the city and within the state.
West Bengal's PPP model for real estate development in the state has been extremely successful so far, these townships may not follow the PPP model. Unlike the current model comprising a mix of LIG, MIG and HIG apartments sharing common facilities, some portions of the proposed township will be kept aside for low income groups, some for middle income groups and some for high income groups so that 'social problems' can be averted
According to Mr. Pradeep Sureka, President, CREDAI Bengal, The report is expected to get ready within the next 3-6 months and will get tabled before the state government for their approval.
West Bengal municipal affairs & urban development department minister Firhad Hakim endorsed the apex body's initiative to develop satellite townships as it is the need of the hour to decongest the pressure on Kolkata city. Acknowledging the need to fast-track housing development in the state, he said the 3 month-old government required some time to assess the sector.
Of the 10 proposals CREDAI - Bengal plans to table, state government is expected to shortlist about 5 township proposals as viable.
