Not even 2% of buildings in Himachal Pradesh town Shimla are safe and can withstand earthquakes of high intensity.
Town and country planning minister, Mohinder Singh, while replying to a question said only 1.52 per cent of the buildings of Shimla are safe and not prone to earthquakes.
Minister Mohinder Singh said,'' 78.64% of the buildings fall in category A (made of mud, stones etc), followed by 12.96% in category B (made of poor quality timber or large blocks), 6.88% in category C (reinforced buildings) and 1.52% in category X (totally safe). Himachal Pradesh falls in seismic zone IV and V, suggesting severest seismic sensitivity. However, Shimla, once the British summer capital, falls in Zone IV.
